Current situation of foreign-affiliated corporations in Japan

There are quite a few foreign-affiliated firms operating in Japan.

Approximately 3,500 corporations replied to a survey conducted by METI (Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry) in 2011. 30% of them are US firms, 40% are European and 20% are Asian companies. By industry, the manufacturing industry occupied 17.3% and non-manufacturing 82.7 %.

The pretax profit of those foreign-affiliated corporations sharply dropped in 2008 due to the economic downturn precipitated by the Lehman Brothers bankruptcy. However, especially pharmaceutical, transport machinery and telecommunication firms have been gradually recovering. Foreign companies desire to expand business in Japan where income level is high and whose market is attractive.

On the other hand, they pointed out that business costs are high, securing good human resources is difficult and clients demand high standard of products and services in Japan. For these reasons, needs for developing human resources will be growing further and further.

◆Features of training programs tailored to foreign-affiliated companies-developing specific skills to acquire adaptable fighting potential.

There are two typical types of foreign firms in Japan: one are mostly composed of Japanese employees and the other with a lot of foreign managers and executives.

To those Japanese staff in foreign-affiliated companies, we frequently offer training programs of presentation, business documents and facilitation with the aim of complementing specific skills. Most of them are expected to be work-ready equipped with basic business skills as they joined the company in the middle of their career. Besides, we provide many training programs for foreign firms of industries such as pharmaceutical and medicine, chemical and material, beauty and fashion, transport machinery and finance. Programs on customer satisfaction & reception and telephone handling are also popular among those companies in addition to those training programs of specific skills.

◆Training programs to establish human resources development system, management and evaluation appropriate in the Japanese culture

Most of the human resources development systems and curriculums created in the foreign head offices have been introduced to Japan without adapting for Japanese work style or Japanese work concept. Thus we are often requested by foreign firms to conduct training customized according to the needs of their work places.

Moreover, we sometimes provide training for foreign or Japanese employees in managerial positions. They request us to offer programs to solve problems that rise from the differences of management styles and the ways of thinking about evaluation between Japanese and foreign staff under them.
